Course Reflection
Overall, this course has provided valuable insight into the use of geospatial technology and methods that have yet to be explored in previous courses. Through each lesson I was able to target each technique and apply it to real time situations with real data; where as before, it was not as clear to how each methodology would be applied in the real world. This was not only due to the exercises, but to the reflections at the end of each assignment that caused me to think further into other situations in which the same methodology would be applicable.
I plan to carry these newly learned skills with me in further coursework, as well as my professional occupation. I currently work in the field of land conservation and management, and work with various forms of ArcGIS interfaces, such as ArcMap and ArcGIS online. Although I may not use every skill on a day to day basis, I will be walking away with at least a better understanding of GIS and geospatial analysis on several different levels. I could personally see myself applying the geocoding, site selection, and weighted overlay tools for extensive analysis of properties for both management and acquisition. Further more, I will carry this new mindset of decision making and application with me into future advanced courses. Having a basic understanding of how these tools and techniques are applied will allow me to progress with ease while working on further GIS tasks. I have set the goal of using at least one of these new methods within my work monitoring conservation easements by the end of the season.
